did anyone else see this? would love to hear your comments :)

btw, one of the characters i really enjoyed in 2046 was carina lau's Mimi - i think her character is the same/very similar to her character in days of being wild. true? if so, it makes me wonder if WKW is a fan of jacques demy, who had the same kind of character references across two different films (Lola, who is the principle in the film of the same name, and referenced in Umbrellas of Cherbourg).

Please write a little, why you think it's a great movie. I'm just curious what you all have to say, because I have a friend who is spellbound by this movie, which I liked and thought was good, and he is outraged why I didn't find it to be the pinnacle of contemporary cinema. And there is a film I think is great that he only thinks of as good and is equally as outraged in this regard as In The Mood For Love, because of my GREAT rating. It has a lot to do with me and his personality that goes beyond our film sensibilities. But anyways I'll let u guys tell it...

In a movie about relationships, the relationships are totally lacking. loss is a hard thing for me to deal with in the first place, but this gets totally absurd. you want to start bashing tony over the head for his utter stupidity and selfishness by the end of it, but i guess thats what hes supposed to make you think. either way, pretty unsuccessful. the scifi thing just turns out to be weird. at first i thought they were all playing each other in the future but even that doesnt turn out to be true. as usual, chris doyle does amazing things, but still not the same as in the mood for love, i thinkly most because as good as style and artwork can be, it all needs to back up the bigger picture, which is weak throughout.

this is a raw version, but i had to get it out of my system. im just so dissapointed. im gonna half to watch in the mood again to get my spirits up.

even with all these complaints, still worth seeing. better than most of the schlock we see nowadays.

Let me preface my comments by saying that I own every WKW film on DVD. That's how much I value his work.

With "2046," Wong Kar-Wai has labored over a film that feels just that -- labored. Its elliptical narrative fails to deliver any real drama at all, while at the same time occasionally bordering on pretentious. I really, really wanted to like this film. But I kept waiting for the point.

There are a few spoilers below, but it's almost impossible to ruin the surprise of a film in which not much happens.

It is not a sequel to "In the Mood for Love," yet it refers back to that film as a touchstone for its events. Tony Leung's character is ostensibly the same Mr. Chow we saw in that last film, yet his formerly pensive, sensitive character has morphed into an oily bastard who suffers occasional pangs of guilt.

His story, set in Hong Kong and Singapore in the years immediately following "In the Mood," takes him through three relationships. In the first, with the utterly gorgeous and saucy Zhang Ziyi, he uses her as a toy for his amusement, but rejects commitment when she falls in love with him (anyone who would dump the delicious Zhang loses all my sympathy). In the second, he befriends his landlord's daughter (the almost too-cute Faye Wong), with whom he now falls in love. Finally, he has a brief encounter with Black Spider (Gong Li), who shares the name of his former flame, Su Lizhen (Maggie Cheung, who appears onscreen for only about 2 seconds, damnit!). Since she also dresses like a gothic version of the old Su Lizhen, he inadvertently falls for her as well, though he knows it's doomed.

The science fiction story he writes as a metaphor for his life completely fails to connect to any kind of a greater theme. Not only does the supposed meta-narrative only intersect briefly with the main plot, it never truly deepens the story or characters in any illuminating way, except in the broadest, most obvious strokes possible. His sci-fi alter-ego, Tak, falls for an android (also Faye Wong) who won't return his affection. So what? The comparison drawn between the two adds nothing to our understanding of Chow. 2046, we are told in opening narration, is supposedly where people go to recapture lost memories; again, this is supposedly the purpose of Chow's story -- to recapture his own memories -- but it doesn't work as a plot device in the least.

In fact, much of this film feels sophomoric, as the characters often telegraph what they are thinking and feeling through awkward dialogue. The film looks like what it is, an overshot, overwrought, excercise in burning reels of film that was discovered in the editing room.

What a mess! Poor Wong. He overreaches and falls flat on his face with this one. I don't hate the film, because there is almost enough there to hang onto -- but it is easily his weakest work. It's also his most frustrating film, since you can see what he was getting at and where he failed.

Yes, there are some beautiful shots, including a few that deliberately reference specific shots from "In the the Mood for Love." And WKW's taste in soundtrack music is impeccable as always. But the movie is all bun and no burger.

The company to which I link below is the distributor for, I believe, mainland China, since the version I saw was in Mandarin (Tony was dubbed, Zhang was not) with English subs. So this wouldn't be a bootleg per se, but an unauthorized import. It's also floating around on Bit Torrent.

http://www.gdface.com/product/product.php?Title=obYyMDQ2obc=&ID=Nzcx

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. We all waited far too long for such a disappointing result. Maybe next the film will put him back on track.

According to Chinese media, director Wong Kar-Wai is still shooting his 2046. Since returning from Cannes, he has made some additional scenes with Maggie Cheung and Faye Wong. More scenes might be shot in Shanghai. As the result, Maggie Cheung's share will be increased from one-shot cameo in the Cannes version to a role with approximately 15 minutes scenes in the final theatrical version. 2046 will be released in China, including Hong Kong, late September.

I am new here-- hello--

I have a question: there was a book being created from the still shots of In The Mood For Love, and there was no way to find out how to buy one. It had poetic phrases along with the photos. It was so beautiful-- I really wanted it badly. I sent along an inquiry to the Block2 e-mail, which came back returned. I gave up, seeing no other way to find the book.

Now, recently, the French website:www.inthemoodforlove-wkw.com/flash.html

works just the same...
but the English version: http://www.wkw-inthemoodforlove.com/

does not for me somehow... which is where I found the info about the book.

Does anyone know anything about this book-- and how to find information in English about it? My elementary Japanese is as good as a two-year-old child's. Otherwise, I am in the dark.

Indeed, Wong Kar-wai made the comment that "although Chris Doyle looks western in outward appearance", (as well he might since he was born in NSW), "on the inside he is Chinese & not just Chinese but Hong Kong Chinese"

I was watching in case there was a shot of Karen Mok or perhaps a commentary from her, but unfortunately not. Tell you what though, Chris Doyle swears like you wouldn't believe, I mean every second word was 'F' to the point where it was almost an affectation. Certainly I didn't think that his constant swearing at an LA based University film school, (re his work on Psycho) was very appropriate, especially in America where they take every little thing to heart, (no offence to any US forum viewers).

Very interesting piece though & his Chinese girlfriend/wife was in a word 'Hot'..........

They showed excerpts from Fallen Angels & a couple of earlier films, whose names I can't remember right now.
